"Unterwegs" (German for "On the Track") is a book recommended for the eager and more advanced pianist who wants to dig deeper into modern piano styles. The difficulty ranges from about UNISA Grade 6 to 8.
This compilation of 24 piano pieces by different contemporary German composers is written in different styles such as Latin, Jazz, Blues and Pop. Composers include (among others) Peter Hamburger, Phillip Moehrke, Stephan Zebe and Alexander Jacobi, last of whom is a staff member at Allmusic, Cape Town. With "Ich steh an deiner Krippen hier", he contributed a pop ballad based on the well-known Bach tune, a quite melancholic, though demanding composition.
Most of the 24 pieces are original compositions, five however relate to church tunes and will definitely prick up your fellow church-goers' ears if played in Church.
The accompanying CD includes 19 of the pieces and was recorded by acclaimed pianist Daniel Roos from Freiburg/Breisgau. It will give you a good idea of interpretation in advance. Edited by Bernhard Reich.
For advanced pianists who want to dig deeper into popular music and jazz styles, "All of You" by German composer Michael Schütz is a definite must. The book contains 27 pieces ranging from about UNISA Grade 6 to university level. The appealing arrangements cover various styles such as Pop, Funk, Ragtime, Barrelhouse, Samba and Salsa. Some of the pieces are pop arrangements of traditional church tunes and will definitely prick up your fellow church-goers' ears if you play them e. g. in a Sunday Service.
